Kaytranada’s new video for “You’re the One” was inspired by early ’90s black sitcoms — watch

Last week, Montreal producer Kaytranada nabbed the coveted Polaris Prize for his debut album, 99.9%, beating out the likes of Grimes and Cary Rae Jepsen. Today, he’s back with a new music video for LP standout “You’re the One” featuring Syd.

The Shomi Patwary-directed clip pays homage to early ’90s black sitcoms — the beatmaker’s favorite childhood programming — such as Martin and Living Single, as well as features a plot inspired by Eddie Murphy’s ’80s comedy Coming to America. Watch it up above.

As if 99.9% and its recently unveiled 0.001% ??? companion mixtape weren’t enough for his loyal listeners, it appears Kaytra has a pair of high-profile collaborations on the way. In a Twitter Q&A last Friday, Chance the Rapper announced that he and the producer worked on a song called “They Say”, which will be released soon; the two previously linked up Chance’s Coloring Book track “All Night”. A Snapchat from Kaytra last night also revealed that he and Outkast’s André 3000 have been spending time together in the studio.
