Beyoncé brings mothers of police violence victims to MTV VMAs

Beyoncé has used her very public persona to speak out for social justice in many ways. From the visuals in Lemonade to her performance at the Super Bowl last year, she’s been an unwaveringly vocal supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement. At tonight’s VMAs, she once again showed solidarity by bringing as her dates the mothers of victims in some of the most prominent instances of police brutality.

Bey’s entourage included Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner; Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon Martin’s mother; Lesley McSpadden-Head, mother of Michael “Mike” Brown, Jr.; and Wanda Johnson, Oscar Grant’s mother. All four women appeared in Lemonade in remembrance of their fallen sons.

Once again, Beyoncé has brought their names and memories back into the spotlight with a simple, beautiful act.
