The 2019 Golden Globe Awards were held Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Now in its 76th year, the Golden Globes honor the best in film and television.

On the film front, Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book were the clear winners. The blockbuster Queen biopic surprised critics everywhere by taking home both Best Motion Picture, Drama and Best Actor, Drama for Rami Malek, while Peter Farrelly’s crowd-pleasing dramedy grabbed Best Motion Picture, Comedy; Best Screenplay; and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.

However, the night’s biggest surprise came when Glenn Close won Best Actress, Drama for The Wife, upsetting frontrunner Lady Gaga for A Star is Born. Fortunately for the Fame Monster, she didn’t go home empty-handed, winning Best Original Song for “Shallow”, which she shares with Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt, and Mark Ronson.

A few other highlights included Christian Bale winning Best Actor, Comedy for Vice; Alfonso Cuaron winning Best Director for Roma; Regina King winning Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk; and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse winning Best Animated Film.

Television was similarly scatterbrained with only two series nabbing more than a single award. Netflix’s The Kominsky Method proved to be an unlikely dark horse, running away with both Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy for Michael Douglas and Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy. While FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace won Best TV Movie or Limited Series and Best Actor in a Limited-Series or TV Movie for Darren Criss.

Otherwise, the night saw an expansive slate of winners in the medium. Among the many highlights included FX’s The Americans winning Best TV Series, Drama; Rachel Brosnahan’s consecutive win for Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy for Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; and Globes host Sandra Oh winning Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama for BBC’s Killing Eve.
