Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington is next set to star in Fences, a theatrical adaptation of August Wilson’s 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play of the same name. Washington previously won a Tony for his performance on the Broadway revival in 2010, and based on the newly revealed trailer for the forthcoming film version, a third Oscar may also be in his future.
For those unfamiliar with the play, it is set in 1950s Pittsburgh and tells the story of a former Negro league baseball play, now working as a garbage man, who struggles to provide for his family amidst a racially-tense climate.
Viola Davis, who also starred alongside Washington in the 2010 Broadway adaptation and also won a Tony for her performance, also appears in the film.
Long a passion project, Washington also directed the film himself, marking the first time he’s done so since 2007’s The Great Debaters.
