The Strokes have announced a new EP entitled Future Present Past. Due out June 3rd via Casablancas own Cult Records, the release features three new tracks: “Drag Queen”, “OBLIVIUS”, and “Threat of Joy”.
Frontman Julian Casablancas made the announcement earlier this morning on the debut episode of his monthly SiriusXMU radio show, “Culture Void”. Casablancas also premiered “OBLIVIUS”, a track rife with killer electric guitar lines, thundering synths, and an explosive chorus from Casablancas. You can hear the track now over at Cult Records, where all three songs are set to be streamed later today.

The EP was recorded in Austin, Texas and New York City with producer Gus Oberg. It also features a remix of “OBLIVIUS” by drummer Fab Moretti. Pre-orders for the release are already going on via Cult Records, including a red 10-inch vinyl that comes with two stickers, one for The Strokes and one for Cult Records. T-shirt and vinyl bundles are also available. The independent retailer version of the vinyl will be blue.
In addition, The Strokes and Cult Records are launching a pop-up shop in New York City that will run from Memorial Day, Monday, May 30th until Sunday, June 5th. The “curated” store will be located at 352 Bowery at Great Jones Street in the East Village. Opening hours will be from noon to 9:00 PM save for the Future Present Past release sale on midnight of Thursday, June 2nd. Special guest DJ sets will be announced soon.

In anticipation of the big announcement, illuminated projections advertising the EP were spotted throughout New York City. Casablancas’ own Cult Records have also been promoting the project on their Instagram account and official website.
The Strokes’ last full-length was 2013’s Comedown Machine. Late last year, the band was spotted working in a Monterrey, Mexico studio where they reportedly recorded new material. Shortly thereafter, they were announced as headliners of New York’s Governors Ball Music Festival, set to take place June 3rd to 5th. A press release notes that the release of Future Present Past was meant to coincide with their headlining spot.

Along with the announcement of the new EP came The Strokes’ first filmed interview in 10 years. Recorded prior to their performance at this year’s South by Southwest, the discussion isn’t the most serious or in depth Q&A, but sees the band talk about the Internet, their desert island records, and whether or not they still surprise each other.
