Nyack Boat Club Conducts Junior Sailing Program

Nyack, New York - March 2, 2009 - The Nyack Boat Club has a very successful junior sailing program that is primarily for family and friends of Nyack Boat Club members, but is also open to the public.

There are two four-week sessions over the summer, starting with the first session beginning Monday, June 29 through Friday, July 24, and the second session beginning on Tuesday, July 28 through Friday, Aug. 21. The nineteen daily sessions run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during the four-week course.

The sailing instructional programs for ages 8-15 will follow both the general guidelines and the safety guidelines developed by the NBC Board, the Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound, U.S. Sailing Association and U.S. Optimist Dinghy Association.

All of our instructors are USSA certified. The junior sailors attending the program sail and race Optimists, 420s and Lasers. For those sailors not able to bring their own boats, the Nyack Boat Club does charter equipment for the sailing sessions.

The cost is $1,060 for one session, and $1,675 for both sessions. Children without their own boats will be able to charter a club boat (Optimist or 420) for which the child will be responsible for care and maintenance. The boat usage fee is $135 for the four-week session.

A child's parents or legal guardians will be responsible for the costs of repairing any damage to the boat. If your child does bring his/her own boat, a $35 fee for storage will be assessed for each four-week session.

The club will process only fully completed applications, which includes the required medical and insurance forms. A deposit check made out to Nyack Boat Club for $100.00 must accompany the application.

Look for enrollment and application forms, season calendars, and other important program documents on the Nyack Boat Club website at www.nyackboatclub.org.

If you are a USSA certified instructor and are interested in becoming an instructor in the program, please contact Rick Feldman at rick@specialgraphics.com

Optimist sailboats are designed especially for children, with a broad beam for exceptional safety and stability. The boats are simple to operate -- just one sail, one line, and one daggerboard. To obtain more information on the Optimist sailboat see the class association website at www.usoda.org.

The Club 420 sailboat is manageable for sailors coming out of the Optimist class and enables young sailors to learn teamwork, trapeze, and spinnaker techniques. To obtain more information on the Club 420 see the class association website at www.club420.org.

The Nyack Boat Club was founded in 1909 to encourage and support yachting and yacht racing on the Hudson River and surrounding waters, good seamanship and navigation, and to provide for the recreation and enjoyment of its members.
